Swinburne University of Technology and Geotab are advancing AI-powered transport innovation and research in Australia through the launch of the Geotab-Swinburne Transport Innovation Hub.
The hub marks the next phase in Swinburne’s partnership with Geotab, a global leader in connected transportation solutions, bridging the gap between academic research and real-world industry application.
“Our partnership with Geotab reflects a shared commitment to innovation and real-world impact. By working closely with Geotab, we are strengthening the connection between research, education and industry to help future-proof the transport and freight sector and build a more resilient industry,” says Swinburne’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research, Professor Karen Hapgood.
“Transport is changing fast. AI, connected vehicles and sustainability objectives are reshaping how fleets operate, and the industry can’t solve these challenges alone,” says Neil Cawse, Founder and CEO of Geotab.
“By combining Geotab’s real-world data with Swinburne’s research expertise, this partnership will help accelerate smarter, safer and more sustainable transport outcomes grounded in Australian conditions – the distances, infrastructure and operational realities unique to this market – while helping prepare the next generation of industry leaders,” Cawse says.
Driving AI-enabled transport innovation
Based at Swinburne’s Hawthorn campus, the Geotab-Swinburne Transport Innovation Hub will serve as a national centre for AI-enabled transport innovation, supporting collaboration across transport data, telematics and intelligent mobility systems.
“The transport sector is under pressure to improve productivity, safety and sustainability while adapting to rapid change caused by AI and data,” says Professor Hadi Ghaderi, Director of the Geotab-Swinburne Transport Innovation Hub.
The hub will bring together industry professionals, policymakers and researchers to tackle these challenges and translate data insights into practical solutions.
“Together with Geotab, we are providing industry with a platform to work with researchers, test new ideas and use data to address challenges in productivity, safety and sustainability,” says Professor Ghaderi.
Upskilling the future transport workforce
The hub will also play a key role in developing the next generation of transport and freight professionals by integrating real-world technology and research into learning.
“Swinburne students and researchers will have access to Geotab’s global telematics platform, allowing them to work with real-world data to address critical challenges in urban mobility, safety and sustainability,” says Professor Ghaderi.
“This will build a direct pipeline of skilled graduates who are familiar with advanced telematics technology.”
Apart from direct learning programs, the hub will also open doors for joint research, guest lectures and industry engagement opportunities, to bolster education and prepare students for emerging careers in the transport sector.
