From 2024 to 2025, Swinburne Edge partnered with energy company AGL to co-design, develop, deliver, and evaluate a customised learning program to increase data literacy and data-informed decision-making for the company’s People & Culture (P&C) team. Historically, capability in this area had varied at AGL and there was a need to establish a clear, consistent foundation across the team.

The goal was to build a relevant, practical, and future-focused learning program that supported the P&C team to be data-informed strategic partners, accelerating AGL’s broader transformation agenda.

The solution

The program, 'From Insight to Impact: Data Literacy and Data-Informed Decision Making for P&C’ was designed to build the P&C team’s capability and create a strong, consistent foundation for everyone.

The solution was built around two key priorities:

  1. building capability in data literacy and decision-making to strengthen confidence, influence, and impact across the team
  2. developing a growth mindset, so team members felt confident tackling complex problems, learning through trial and error, and improving over time.

To extend the impact of the initiative and embed participants’ learning, the program was designed with structured goal-setting and spaced check-ins at one- and three-month intervals. This helped learners to:

  • apply learning in context
  • track progress
  • reinforce new behaviours.

Relevant to team members’ roles

The blended learning design combined experiential activities with team-based challenges, encouraging collaboration, problem-solving, and shared ownership of insights.

Unlike generic data training, it connected directly to participants’ roles through P&C-specific case studies, live datasets, a structured decision-making framework and activities to support behavioural change and uplift.

The program helped P&C teams use data as part of their everyday work. It enabled them to give better advice, have more informed conversations, and support clear business results. The improvement was purposeful and meaningful.

Aligned with broader organisational goals

AGL’s learning program directly supports the organisation’s ‘future-fit people and culture’ strategy and underpins the capability required for AGL’s transition towards decarbonisation and a sustainable energy future. When data and technology are used effectively, workforce decisions are stronger, more informed, and future-ready.

Key outcomes

Following the program, 92% of P&C team members reported increased confidence in using data and digital tools, enabling them to engage more proactively in data-led discussions and decision-making. This shift has been critical in supporting P&C through organisational transformation and an increasingly digital work environment.

Business impact

The P&C team has increased their capability in translating data into actionable insights, equipping business leaders with clearer recommendations that improve workforce planning, talent decisions, and operational outcomes.

With increased data fluency, P&C team members are empowered to lead more effective, evidence-based conversations with senior leaders, strengthening their influence and reinforcing their role as trusted strategic advisors.

Platinum recognition at industry awards

Swinburne Edge and AGL secured Platinum honours for their project at the 2025 LearnX Global Awards in the Learning and Development (Capability Uplift Project) category. Organisations that receive scores of 91 to 100 are awarded a Platinum recognition.

“It's a testament to the transformative workforce design, collaboration, engagement and training programs that Swinburne Edge delivers, creating impactful learning outcomes with our clients and partners,” said Louise Robinson, Executive Director, Swinburne Edge.
